Indie Films

So, there are good films out there, but real gems are, stereotypically, hidden. This year sports 3 indie films that are absolute must sees, one came out in the recent weeks, and the other over summer. First up is Hurt Locker, a war, fairly similar to Jarhead but taking place in Iraq, is about a small bomb squad that goes through at times unrelenting suspense on the front lines. The production values are typical for an indie but the quality is up there with other modern/ semi modern war films like Black Hawk Down. The suspense during some of the disarming sequences are at times unbelievable, conveying the scary reality impeccably well. Edge of your seat action has never been the same.

Next is of my specialty, guitarists. It Might Get Loud is essentially Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, The Edge of U2, and Jack White of the White Stripes getting together, and simply hitting it off. Its a great documentary, every one of the artists has an interesting story to tell, and surprisingly White's takes center stage often times telling murky childhood stories that truly make sense in the entire context. Page's makes the best sense of rock n roll at its core, and even though the edge is somewhat pushed off to the side, his commentary on the album War, talking about the beginnings of U2, and of course watching his unique ways are interesting as well as thought provoking. Guitar junkies must watch this film and those who aren't know it alls but still interested in rock music would have a good time watching.

Of the three, "The Road" is the one with the strongest narrative and sports one of the darkest atmospheres ever to grace a movie screen. This film is post apocalyptia at its core, survival in a depressing world. The acting is amazing and truly makes the touching father-son relationship.
